LGBT Questions & Answers For Everyone in Healthcare!

Below is the presentation from a talk by Dr. Maile O'Hara at SUNY Downstate, given during the 2010 "Sex in Medicine Week".  Dr. O’Hara, a clinical psychologist at the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture, has worked extensively with the LGBT population.

(Also, don't miss out on reading an article written by a Downstate medical student after attending Dr. O'Hara's event.  The article was published right here at DownstateCafe!)

Conscientious Care for the Patient

Below are questions submitted into an anonymous "LGBT Q&A" drop box at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and answers supplied by Downstate's LGBTA(&Allies?) Club.   If you would like to submit a question by email, please contact _____.

Q: Why is there a questions box for LGBT issues, and why not for issues about all people regardless of their sexual orientation?

A: Many statistics point to a drastically higher rate of health risk factors for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people (see bottom).  Among the reasons for this are a combination of historical, social, political, legal and community biases, all of which, unfortunately, still exist to this day.  Even in healthcare.  Therefore, the "LGBT Q&A" boxes placed in the public spaces of health care settings (so far, on the 5th & 6th floor bulletin boards of SUNY Downstate's MS1 and MS2 carrels) attempt to help increase engagement & awareness on these health disparities for all current and future health care providers.

General Question: Did you know...
-That homosexual males have a suicide rate 9 times greater than heterosexual males?
-That one third of people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender suffer from depression?
-That hate crimes based on sexual orientation are rising in the United States each year?
